Vintage Moroccan Carpet
Ait Bou Ichaouen rugs more known as Talsint rugs belong to the tribes of Aït Hamou Ousad, Aït Hadou Belahsen, Belboul, Aït Saïd Oulahsen, Aït Ali Ousaid and of El Bour. Talsint is the biggest town in the area where these are woven, close to the Algerian border, in north east Morocco. Their artwork was not discovered by the outside world until 1990‘s. The women from Talsint use bold, striking colours and tribal motifs, which reflect an older North-African weaving tradition.
Talsint is a rural municipality of the Figuig province. In this region, the winters are very cold and snowy and overall, the year in the mountainous area, the climate is cold and humid so the Talsint rugs are often shaggy with an incredible quality of natural wool base and flatweave edge. Today, it’s become extremely rare and difficult to find a vintage piece from this Berber tribe. The weaver acquired and developed her skills and technics with time, patience and effort. This practice combining with the intuition of the weaver she has in the 70’s / 80’s cannot be compared to a newly made rug. Every Berber tribe as different style of design, colors and tribal patterns. All tiny details are unique and tell a story. It’s very common to find the symbol of the ‘saw’ in the Talsint rugs. It’s a symbol of metalworkers as the Berbers think that the metal keeps the negative energy away.
The carpet motifs of the Berbers have antecedents in the signs we found in rock art and mobiliary art from the European Ice Age and in Neolithic evidence from the Ancient Near East and the Mediterranean area. When and how the transfer took place remain hidden in the mists of prehistory.
Berber carpets from the High Atlas and the Atlantic plains were at that time under the influence of urban carpets from Rabat and Mediouna which embodied wealth and prestige. This could lead to enrichment, but also to some alteration of original Berber motifs. Carpets from the Middle Atlas, like the Ait Bou Ichaouen rugs, however, remained largely free from outside influence.
What has distinguished it through all the ages is the creativity and authenticity of the moroccan rugs.
The sheep wool is known for his resistant structure by producing resilient fibers that retain the shape after stretching or washing. This material has many advantages: it provides warmth, bring softness for your interior, absorb moisture and is very resistant to time. With all these features, Moroccan rugs are known like very durable rugs.
Berber women, who are the maneuvering leaders of the Moroccan carpet, spend weeks and sometimes months setting up a carpet. This time is justified by other household and family tasks. In general, the average time of weaving or knotting is two hours per day for each woman.
