”Think of it as an adventure into a land of desert warriors and distant caravans, majestic mountain peaks and ranges, fertile plains and vast stretches of the Sahara, exotic walled cities and Berber fortress towns, of a strong but friendly people and, best of all, of a world filled with the fresh and living colors of their rugs and art.” – Pickering
Berber women are the creator of all the famous Moroccan rugs. While they weave a rug, they add always a personal touch by creating designs with strong meaning and story. Based on history, the tribe’s people living in the atlas mountains were in the need of some furniture that will keep them warm during the cold seasons. Since the only resource of living was pasturing, they used sheep fleece for weaving in order to be spun into a yarn that gives birth to rugs. These handwoven rugs are designed with different symbols like the lozenge, lozenge with extended sides, chevron, X-shape, straight line with hatching, triangles, ladders, zigzag, etc… Each one had a meaning for instance lozenge, X-shape, chevron refer to women, and straight lines, sticks, and twig-and-ladder refer to men. Many others carry themes such as birth, protection against the evil eye, a good fortune that holds Baraka, fertility, and magical power. All the symbols have their own signification and were conveyed from weaver to weaver over centuries. This is the reason why it still retains its authenticity.
The sheep wool is known for its resistant structure by producing resilient fibers that retain the shape after stretching or washing. This material has many advantages: it provides warmth, brings softness to your interior, absorbs moisture, and is very resistant to time. With all these features, Moroccan rugs are known as very durable rugs.
Berber women, who are the maneuvering leaders of the Moroccan carpet, spend weeks and sometimes months setting up a carpet. This time is justified by other household and family tasks. In general, the average time of weaving or knotting is two hours per day for each woman.
