Moroccan Rug
Boucherouite rugs are rag rugs with riot of colors all jostling with exuberant patterns. During 1960‘s and 1970’s, the consequence of the development in Morocco’s rural areas with the move away from nomadic animal husbandry to settled farming and other modern forms of rural employment. Wool as the primary raw material for the production of carpets for Moroccan domestic use has become ever rarer and expensive so all the replacement materials have become ever more important.
The women in all the regions in Morocco started to create a new type of rug that doesn’t use wool: the famous Moroccan Boucherouite rug. It’s extravagant, pop, funky, fresh, stylish and trendy. Typically made from a variety of recycled materials and textiles like recycled rag strips, clothes and yarns from a variety of textile remnants: old clothing, cotton, synthetic fibres, lurex, nylon as well as plastic from grain shipping bags to create this beautiful rug.
Berber people use the boucherouite to place it on a mule or a horse or to cover up the expensive woolen rug in the house. It’s ideal when members of a family want to sit down to prepare food and if there are small children in the room. The beautiful aspect of these rugs is that it has a minimal impact on the environment and is gentle for our planet.
Berber women weave these carpets always freetyle. The pattern is usually asymmetrical and the rug looks extravagant. The most significant thing about the whole thing is the bright and electric color of these scraps. You can find them in various shapes and sizes that look both catchy and attractive to behold. In Darija, the langage used in Morocco, “bu sherwit” means old clothing, a piece torn from recycled clothing.
These rugs are literally art and will put instantanly beauty, energy and life in your house. Easy to wash, they are very resistant and can get along with almost any interior design.
