Handmade Moroccan Carpet
Zemmour rugs are handwoven in the city of Zemmour, which is a fertile territory located in the Northwest of Morocco, somewhere between Meknes and Rabat, known for moderate climate and fertile lands, suitable for the grazing of different types of herds, which results in the production of excellent pure wool that is used in combination with cotton to produce different sizes of rugs.
What characterizes these carpets is the usage of a different set of geometric motifs on a neutral-colored area with generally the same color theme. The weavers use geometric motifs to decorate their rugs, but most importantly, they use this art as a form of expression of their own stories, hopes, secrets and dreams that they cannot express verbally. Every single motif has a symbolic significance and tells a story of its own. The name of Zemmours comes from the Berber word” Azemmur”, which means olive. Before settling in their current location in northwestern Morocco, they were originally nomadic or semi-nomadic and pastoral tribes moving on the low plateaus to the north and west of the Middle Atlas Mountains, suitable for livestock and agriculture.
In the past, this tribe were renowned for their warlike and plundering temper. Foreigners had to negotiate a payment to cross their territory to ensure their passage. Today, these rugs are one of the most reputed types of handwoven carpets in Morocco. The authenticity of these rugs is unquestionable and their value increases as the time goes by. Each item is a valuable piece of art representing a cultural heritage passed on from generation to generation.
For instance, the lozenge form is a pattern symbolizing the mother’s body or the whole female figure. Sometimes, we find in these weavings’ lozenges with extended sides, which may be interpreted as open sexual readiness of the woman, with sometimes a small element between one of the extended sides (representing the woman’s legs) which indicates a birth and represents a woman and her newborn baby.
The charm of Moroccan rugs are known worldwide and this is the only form of art that the women have perfected in the course of centuries
Moroccan rug is the silent writing without words of the weavers. Most of the women living in isolated villages never got the chance to go to school and learn how to write or read. Their stunning rugs are the only way for them to express their feelings. Marriage is the high point and turning point in her life, when she leaves her family in early life, to bear children in new surroundings. It’s clear that this capital event must be recorded inside the rug. The Berber woman is closely linked to her carpet. She weaves and knots at her own loom at home in the village. She is then actively creative and work freestyle with only her experience and patience. The particular knot allows her, while remaining tied to the traditional forms of her tribe, to introduce her own intuition and imagination, her wishes and cares in her work.
